The Adda River and San Michele Bridge

The Adda flows between steep banks, woodland and engineering works. Above the gorge, San Michele Bridge marks the landscape with its great iron arch.

Where landscape meets engineering

At Paderno d'Adda, the river runs through a deep gorge and San Michele Bridge links the two banks with a single iron arch. High above the water and still carrying both road and railway traffic, it is one of Lombardy's most recognisable examples of industrial heritage.

Below the bridge, towpaths and shared walking-and-cycling routes follow the Adda past hydraulic works, historic power stations and stretches of woodland. The visit can remain brief and focus on viewpoints, or continue along the river.

Three ways to read the Adda landscape

The bridge dominates the scene, but the place is best understood by descending towards the river and following the traces of water and industry.

The great iron arch

From the edge of the gorge, San Michele Bridge appears as a single structure stretched between the two banks. Its scale becomes clearer from different viewpoints, without approaching unprotected areas or interfering with traffic.

The towpath and Naviglio di Paderno

As you descend towards the Adda, the landscape changes scale. The path follows the water and passes hydraulic works designed to overcome the rapids and make the river part of a wider network of transport and production.

Ecomuseo Adda di Leonardo

The bridge and the works along the river belong to a wider story of nature, history and engineering. The ecomuseum connects places and evidence along the Adda and also highlights Leonardo's hydraulic studies.

From the bridge to the riverbank

A balanced visit begins at a safe viewpoint and, when time and conditions allow, continues along a section of the towpath. Allow for the climb back when estimating the duration.

  1. View the bridge from above

Reach the validated stopping point at Paderno and observe the arch in relation to the Adda gorge. Do not stop in areas reserved for traffic.

  2. Descend towards the river

Follow the pedestrian route checked by the property. The descent makes the height of the bridge tangible and introduces the towpath landscape.

  3. Walk along the Adda

Choose a section suited to your available time and pace, among woodland, hydraulic works and industrial heritage. You can return along the same route.

  4. Return to La Corte

Climb back to the starting point and return to Montevecchia, giving the visit the time it deserves rather than treating it as a quick stop.

Information for a safe visit

The height difference between the bridge and the river is part of the experience. It should be explained clearly, together with path conditions and possible changes caused by works or weather.
